Netarts - Oregon Coast Visitors Association

Netarts

Netarts is a small community situated at the mouth of the Netarts Bay, just south of Oceanside, along the Three Capes Scenic Route. Only inquisitive travelers will discover the small community as it is off the beaten path and therefore offers peace and quiet sought by vacationers who want a truly local experience. This area is in the middle of 2500 acres of lush coastal rainforest creating an amazing backdrop for the town. Short day trips on the scenic route will take visitors along several spectacular headlands, Cape Meares, Cape Lookout and Cape Kiwanda, all of which offer excellent day hikes. Nearby Cape Lookout State Park offers tent camping, yurts, cabins, and excellent beachfront for beachcombing.

Netarts Bay spans 7-miles from north to south and is separated from the ocean by a long club shaped stretch of forested sand known as the Netarts Spit. Inside the bay, at low tide, many search for different varieties of clam, and a nearby marina offers boat and crab pot rentals.

In the Native American language of the local Killamook tribe, “Ne ta at”, meant “near the water.” Later, modernized spelling became Netarts. The best known area of occupation for the local Indians was on the Netarts Spit, with other midden piles in evidence at most creek outlets around the bay. The earliest Tillamook Indian settlement in the county was in the Netarts area and is believed to date back to the early 1400’s. The first white settlement of Netarts Bay was in 1863.
