First Time Participant Wins Close Competition at Annual Chowder Cook-Off
Lincoln City, OR – Under the tent at the Tanger Outlet Mall, over 2,000 guests enjoyed the comfort food of the Oregon Coast at the 10th Annual Lincoln City Chowder Cook-Off.
On Saturday, November 8th, eight restaurants, all from the Oregon Coast, competed for the title of “Best Chowder” as voted on by people’s choice. Voting was extremely close with only 20 votes separating 1st from 3rd place. A new champion was crowned this year with 1st place awarded to Chef Julia Karstrom of Tiki’s at 51st of Lincoln City for their “Love Chowder.” This was the first time Tiki’s participated in a Lincoln City Cook-Off event, and it paid off big and earned them rave reviews.
Chef Ged Aydelott of Pelican Pub & Brewery of Pacific City took 2nd place for their “New England-Style Clam Chowder.” 3rd place went to Chef Stephen Williamson of Roadhouse 101 of Lincoln City for their “Razor Clam Chowder.” Also participating was Barnacle Bill’s, Chinook Winds Casino Resort and Deli 101 of Lincoln City, as well as Oregon BoxLunch from Florence and Sand Dollar Restaurant and Lounge of Rockaway Beach.
In its second year as a two-day event, the Chowder Cook-Off served up approximately 20,000 samples of the Oregon Coast’s favorite comfort food. Live music played throughout Saturday afternoon performed by artists Mark Alan and the Ivie-Meziere Trio. Local clamming and crabbing expert Bill Lackner was on hand to provide information on how to catch your own dinner, while Oregon State Parks gave tips on how to cook your catch while camping. Rusty Truck Brewing provided local craft beer and the Wine Shop @ the Eventuary supplied select Oregon wines. As has become a staple of the Lincoln City Cook-Offs, Captain Dan’s Pirate Pastry Shop and My Petite Sweet offered up their signature treats.
Chinook Winds Casino Resort sponsored Sunday’s activities at the Chowder Cook-Off in honor of Native American Heritage Month. Tribal drummers performed throughout the day and Storyteller Esther Stutzman entertained the crowd with her words, while Executive Chef Jack Strong of Chinook Winds offered up two live cooking demonstrations along with free samples highlighting Native inspired dishes.
Grand prize drawing winner Lydia Calder of Edmonton, Alberta Canada took home a weekend getaway to Lincoln City and a Tanger shopping spree, and a number of other happy guests received door prizes each hour.
